Template:Convert to STL
This image could be re-created using 3D models as STL files. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an STL form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with
{{3D version available|new image name}} . |
Use as {{convert to STL}}

Types of files from which three-dimensional information can be extracted:[edit]
Stereograms[edit]
Commons has many historical and recent stereograms, which are images that have two parts from slightly different views to reconstruct human binary vision, lending depth cues (these two parts can be side-by-side, as in a ViewMaster card, or overlapping but differentiated by complementary shade, such as when using 3D glasses. These cues can also be extracted programmatically to establish a scene.
Generally a full scene is not possible as the back side is not shown, and the format must be converted from a point cloud to the triangular mesh of STL, but this can often be done semi-automatedly and a 'dummy' back constructed.
CAD diagrams[edit]
Commons has screenshots of parts and other objects in computer-aided design, engineering, or manufacturing applications, and also SVG versions of such diagrams; however, most do not currently have a 3D equivalent uploaded. This can be remedied by locating a libre source, or recreating in a similar CAD program (excepting objects for which doing so would infringe patents or copyright, or constitute a weapon).
Topographical site maps[edit]
These can be useful for understanding the overall layout of an archaeological or other site more easily than a set of elevation views could.
