David Shankbone Creative Commons Licenses Are Now Public Domain[edit]
Hi all - I've been moving all my photography licenses—to the extent they don't violate respective laws and personality rights—out of the Creative Commons license structure and into the public domain. The most significant shift is that anyone can profit off my work and no need to give me credit. This license shift is evident on my Flickr, including photos from the Rolling Stones' last concert (which was amazing - can't believe a guy like Mick Jagger exists) to Lenny Kravitz in Montreal. Anyone has 'license' to change my Creative Commons licenses into the Public Domain. David Shankbone (talk) 07:20, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
- I made a license conversion request at Commons:Village_pump#David_Shankbone_converts_license_to_public_domain. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:30, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Lane! Man, it's been a minute since I saw you! Happy New Year! Would love to hear what you're up to - DM me on my e-mail, I don't come here much anymore. Would be nice to catch up. I'll state my intentions on the thread in your link. David Shankbone (talk) 08:48, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry - when I just checked it looks like the discussion was removed. Looking to change the license of my photos to the free-ist license possible. Anyone can edit, anyone can use it for whatever purpose be it commercial or non-profit, and I do not need the credit. I thought that is "Public Domain" but I haven't kept up with the evolution of copyright options since I stopped contributing 10 years ago. David Shankbone (talk) 08:53, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Discussion was archived (without result?) here. I believe the best approach would be to keep the old CC licenses (non-revocable anyway) but add a new one reflecting you PD intention. It's all a bit complicated here but we have to be on the safe side so re-users may always have trace back the original license.--Denniss (talk) 10:58, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Deniss. I just want my photos to be as free and unfettered as legally possible. If there is something I need to do to give permission to blanketly give permission to add such a license, on top of the old CC licenses, to my photographs that qualify, let me know. Gloria Naylor misidentified in photograph?[edit]
Mr. Shankbone, I write to ask if there is any possibility of an error in the photograph in Wikimedia Commons labeled as Gloria Naylor: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gloria_Naylor_by_David_Shankbone.jpg . It would be helpful if you could confirm the identity of the subject. I am a scholar of Ms. Naylor's work. I've seen footage of her before the 2007 date of the photograph and met her around that time. She does not seem to be the subject of the photograph: the eyes, hair, nose and weight all point to quite another person. But, of course, I could be wrong. Would you be willing to confirm? Teenagers has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Alexi Ashe[edit]
Hi David Shankbone, in 2012 you took a picture of Alexi Ashe with her husband Seth Meyers. I am not familiar with Commons and don't know how to go about getting an image just for her by herself. Can you help? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 17:05, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Ottawahitech: David Shankbone hasn't edited here in nearly a year. While there is some chance he might get back to you, it isn't likely.
- Are you trying to get a copy of another picture David might happen to have? Are you requesting that someone else take a picture now? Is this for a Wikimedia project or for some other purpose? - Jmabel ! talk 21:09, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for paying attention, @ Jmabel. Yes, I was vaguely aware that David Shankbone has not been around for a while. The reason I posted the request above is that I recognized that many are still watching this page, and I was hoping to get a friendly person to reply. Yes, I am looking for an image of Ms. Ashe, currently to insert in her WD page, so that information is available for some community member who may choose to make her a "notable person" on some wmf-wiki.
- I have seen before that images that contain two people can be divided to create two separate images, and since Mr. Shankbone has made his collection of images public domain, I hope that means anyone at commons who has the required expertise can split up File:Seth Meyers 2012 Shankbone.JPG to create an image for her? I am not sure though if commons rules allow this for subjects who are not currently "notable"?
- I hope I am making sense? Thanks in advance to anyone who can add to this thread, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:50, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- File:Seth Meyers 2012 Shankbone.JPG could reasonably be cropped to show only Ms. Ashe, if that is any use. - Jmabel ! talk 21:11, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- just a small technical comment: When I posted my 16:50, 27 December 2023 comment above I did not see the message posted by Jmabel at 21:11, 26 December 2023. I did not even get an edit conflict which I infrequently get in similar situations on other wmf-wikis. Ottawahitech (talk) 16:58, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
@Ottawahitech: File:Alexi Ashe, 2012.JPG. If you know more about her, it would be good to add more categories. By the way, File:Seth Meyers 2012 Shankbone.JPG is not public domain, but it is appropriately free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- A big THANK YOU for all your help, Jmabel. I have learned two new things (which I will probably promptly forget due to my pea-sized memory):
- cropping means taking an image and massaging it to remove irrelevant details?
- public domain is not the same as free-license
- and now I am off to WD to insert File:Alexi Ashe, 2012.JPG in the appropriate spot. Ottawahitech (talk) 15:07, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
